Prodipe Bass Guitars: Serious Tone Without the Serious Price Tag
If you want a bass that looks, sounds and plays like the classics without spending a fortune, Prodipe should be on your list. We now stock the full Prodipe bass range at Pluck & Play, from a £225 junior bass to the £450 PJ90, and every model is priced to punch well above its weight.
Why Prodipe?
Prodipe is a French brand that sets out to capture the feel and tone of the iconic basses at a price working musicians can actually afford. In Prodipe's own words, they aim for "the perfect identity of the original models", comparable to instruments costing three times as much.
That shows in the details. Every Prodipe bass comes with Alnico V pickups, a 9.5" fingerboard radius for comfortable playing, a vintage-style bridge and SAVAREZ strings fitted from the factory. The higher-end models step up to alder bodies and bone nuts. These are the kind of spec choices you usually only find on far pricier instruments.
Prodipe JB80: the Jazz-style all-rounder (£250)
If you want one bass that can do everything, start here. The JB80 is inspired by the Jazz basses behind players like John Paul Jones and Jaco Pastorius. Two Alnico V single coils, each with its own volume plus a master tone, let you blend from a warm, round neck tone to a growly, punchy bridge sound. It handles rock, funk, pop and jazz with ease.
The lightweight basswood body is comfortable over a long gig, and the slim 38mm nut makes it quick and easy to play. Choose a maple fingerboard (MA) in Black or Sunburst, or a rosewood-style fingerboard (RA) in Candy Red or Vintage White.
Left-handed? The JB80 LH in Candy Red is £260, so lefties aren't left out.

Prodipe PB80: that classic Precision thump (£250)
Some basses are made to sit right in the pocket, and the PB80 is one of them. A single Alnico V split pickup with simple volume and tone controls gives you the big, round, solid low end that has anchored countless records. Plug-and-play: it just works in a band mix.
The Seventies-style maple neck is neither too thin nor too wide, with a rosewood-style fingerboard and a 42mm nut for that classic P-bass feel. It comes in four finishes: Black, Sunburst, Surf Green and Vintage White.
Prodipe PB Junior: a real first bass (£225)
The biggest mistake with a first instrument is buying something that's hard to play, because it puts people off before they've started. The PB Junior is a proper bass in a smaller 3/4 size, not a toy. It has the same Alnico V PB pickup as its big brother and a round, warm tone.
The shorter 763mm scale and slim 38mm nut make the notes much easier to reach for younger players and smaller hands, and at around 2.9kg it's light enough for long practice sessions. It also makes a great travel bass. It comes with a gig bag, so it's ready to go straight out of the box, in Candy Apple Red or Surf Green.
Prodipe JB90 Alder: the step up (£400 / £430 for the 5-string)
The JB90 is the top of the Prodipe range, and it shows. The body is alder, the tonewood behind many of the most sought-after vintage basses, with an open-pore natural finish that lets the wood breathe. Prodipe describes the sound as "pungent and muscular", with a lively, resonant tone and plenty of sustain.
It has a varnished Canadian maple neck and a maple fingerboard, and it steps up to a bone nut for better sustain and tuning stability. There are two Alnico V JB-style pickups with two volumes and a master tone. It's a bass you can gig, record and keep for years.
Want more range? The 5-string JB90 adds a low B for extra depth, which is ideal for modern rock, metal, worship and session work.
Prodipe PJ90 Alder: Precision and Jazz in one (£450)
Can't decide between a P and a J? You don't have to. The PJ90 pairs a Precision-style pickup in the neck with a Jazz-style pickup at the bridge, both Alnico V. You get big, round pop and rock lines from the P and tight, punchy slap and fingerstyle tones from the J, all from one bass.
It has an alder body with a glossy, transparent red finish for an ultra-vintage rock look, a Seventies-style Canadian maple neck, and a 42mm bone nut. If you only want to own one bass, this is a very strong candidate.
